Lala is again a tropical storm, sending drenching rain and winds across the Hawaiian islands

Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm on Sunday after skirting the Hawaiian islands without making a direct landfall. Despite missing a direct hit, the storm continued to impact the region by bringing drenching rain and powerful winds.

The Big Island bore the brunt of the severe weather, experiencing hurricane-force gusts even as the system was downgraded. Forecasters projected extreme precipitation totals, anticipating nearly three feet (one meter) of rain on the higher windward slopes.
