Land councils powers under review

The Tanzanian government has initiated a formal review of the legislation governing land councils to evaluate their future role in dispute resolution. Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Dr. Juma Homera, announced the development in Dodoma, noting that the assessment aims to determine whether these bodies should be granted expanded authority or if their functions should be fully transitioned to the judicial system.

This review process is intended to improve the effectiveness of land-related conflict management. By weighing the option of strengthening existing councils against the possibility of transferring their responsibilities to the courts, the government seeks to address systemic challenges in how land disputes are currently handled.
