The number of Mexican immigrants in the US falls by 5% for the first time since 1980

Data from the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) indicates that the population of Mexican immigrants in the United States decreased by 5 percent between 2010 and 2024. This marks the first reduction in this demographic group since 1980, with forecasts warning of further declines.

Despite this historic drop in the immigrant population and a reported aggressive U.S. migration policy, remittances sent to Mexico increased by 3.1 percent during the first half of 2026. According to figures released by the Bank of Mexico on August 3, 2026, total remittances reached 30,759 million dollars, with the United States remaining the primary origin of these funds.
