An investigator from Peru's national meteorology and hydrology service, Senamhi, has warned that an eventual strong coastal El Niño phenomenon for 2026-2027 could bring heavy rainfall to the coast alongside severe drought conditions in the sierra.
According to the warning, the resulting drought could be comparable to or even surpass the historical event of 1982-1983. The anticipated impacts are projected to affect the central and southern highlands as well as the Amazon region.
