Gustavo Petro celebrated the eventual release of Luis Fernando Velasco following the Supreme Court's decision: "Unjustly imprisoned"

On the afternoon of Thursday, August 6, 2026, the Supreme Court revoked the preventative detention measure (medida de aseguramiento) against Luis Fernando Velasco, the former Minister of the Interior under President Gustavo Petro.

Velasco had been linked to the ongoing corruption scandal involving the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (Ungrd). With the court's decision, the former official will be released from custody as legal proceedings continue.
