Teachers paid up to RD$880,000 to try to "fix" grades

An extortion and fraud scheme in the Dominican Republic has exposed that educational aspirants paid up to RD$880,000 in attempts to alter their competitive examination results to enter the public education system. The illicit payments were made under the promise that the scores would be fixed.

The case resulted in a criminal conviction after a woman was sentenced to three years in prison specifically for fraud. However, the legal proceedings and the resulting court files brought to light the broader corrupt practices involving educators attempting to buy their way into the system through manipulated test outcomes.
