Milei announces sanctions against oil companies in the Falkland Islands and the creation of a naval base in Tierra del Fuego

Argentine President Javier Milei announced a decree to enforce stricter sanctions against unauthorized oil exploration and extraction activities in the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas. The measures, delivered during a national television broadcast, are framed by the administration as a response to what it characterizes as the unilateral and illegal exploitation of natural resources in the region.

In addition to the sanctions targeting oil companies operating around the islands, the initiative includes plans for the establishment of a new naval base in Tierra del Fuego. Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno subsequently provided further details regarding the comprehensive package of measures designed to reinforce Argentina's position on the disputed territory.
