NewzST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — A man was fatally shot by the police during an alleged confrontation in Balaclava, St Elizabeth on Tuesday sparking protests and a roadblock in the Speculation area near Black River. The man has so far only been identified by his alias 'Mani' who police said was a reputed member of the Speculation gang. Preliminary reports are that shortly after 3:00 pm members of the police’s Area Fugitive Apprehension Team (AFAT) intercepted men on motorcycles on the Balaclava main road.
During the interception there was an alleged confrontation and one of the men was fatally shot. The other suspect escaped on a motorcycle. Police said a firearm was seized during the incident.
The Balaclava main road was cordoned off following the incident. Up to 7:30 pm on Tuesday police were also responding to a roadblock mounted by residents in the Speculation area following the fatal shooting.
