Manchester City found guilty of breaching Premier League financial regulations, according to multiple reports

Manchester City are found guilty of breaking the majority of the 115 financial rules they were accused of breaching, sources tell BBC Sport. Manchester City has reportedly been found guilty on 114 of 115 Premier League charges for breaching financial regulations. The club is expected to appeal the decision from the independent hearing, with sanctions yet to be decided.

The Premier League referred Manchester City to an independent commission in February 2023 over alleged breaches of finance rules spanning the 2009-10 to 2022-23 seasons. The club were charged in February 2023 with more than 100 breaches of league rules, charges which City strenuously denied.

According to The Athletic who broke the news on Friday, the verdict was communicated to Premier League clubs after Thursday’s meeting, with Manchester City found guilty on all but one of the charges.

The sanctions have not yet been determined, meaning the club could still face a range of possible punishments. City are also expected to appeal the verdict. “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality”, The Athletic quoted a Manchester City spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that the club’s position remained consistent with its February 2023 statement and said City had “diligently respected due process” throughout the case. The Premier League brought the charges against City over alleged breaches between 2009 and 2018. The investigation followed the publication of leaked financial documents concerning the club by German newspaper Der Spiegel in 2018.

The case was subsequently referred to an independent commission, which conducted the hearing into the charges. Manchester City have consistently denied the allegations and maintained that they complied with the relevant rules. The club has won eight Premier League titles, four FA Cups, seven League Cups and one Champions League under the ownership of Sheikh Mansour, with six of those major honours coming after the period covered by the charges.
