MCMC probes Facebook post allegedly insulting Islam

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission advised social media users to refrain from uploading or sharing content that is grossly offensive, insulting or inflammatory. PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a complaint over alleged 3R (race, religion and royalty) content insulting Islam.In a statement today, it said the content was posted on Facebook, Bernama reported.MCMC warned that it would not compromise on any misuse of communication platforms.It is now working closely with the police in the ongoing investigation.The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which deals with improper use of network facilities and services.Offenders can be fined up to RM500,000, jailed for up to two years, or both, upon conviction.MCMC said such content had the potential to incite hatred, undermine social unity and threaten racial harmony in the country.The commission also reminded the public to use social media platforms responsibly and refrain from uploading or sharing content that is grossly offensive, insulting or inflammatory.
