Meta has agreed to pay between 16.68 and 17 billion dollars to resolve a series of lawsuits brought by 29 state attorneys general in the United States. The legal actions accused the company of designing its Facebook and Instagram platforms to generate addiction among children and teenagers, deceiving consumers regarding platform safety, and improperly collecting personal data from minors.

Following the settlement, Meta published an open letter urging rival platforms TikTok and YouTube to join the agreement. The company called on these competitors to adopt a similar series of protective measures aimed at safeguarding adolescents using social media.
