Mexico confirms 33 cases of cyclospora and activates epidemiological surveillance

Mexican health authorities announced on Wednesday the detection of 33 cases of cyclospora within the country, prompting the activation of epidemiological surveillance. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite known to cause diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

The announcement coincides with heightened concerns surrounding the parasite, which has recently reached record levels in the United States, where a double-digit number of cases was reported the same week. Meanwhile, international trade relations have faced additional friction as the United States suspended avocado imports from Mexico's top producer due to a security alert, while business leaders in the Dominican Republic warned that ongoing 12.5% tariffs on exports to the U.S. threaten long-term competitiveness.
