Michigan reports first two U.S. deaths in outbreak of cyclospora

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced on Monday that two individuals have died following a cyclospora outbreak in the state. These represent the first confirmed deaths in the United States associated with the microscopic parasite.

State health officials noted that both deceased individuals suffered from underlying health conditions. These pre-existing issues may have been exacerbated by the intestinal illness and subsequent dehydration caused by the infection.
