Ministry advised against taxpayer-funded gigs for international acts

In September 2025, New Zealand minister Louise Upston announced a $70 million major events and tourism package designed to help the country compete with Australia in securing big-name international artists.

Despite this announcement, official advice provided to the government recommended against using taxpayer funds to subsidize performances by international acts.
