Montgomery County Council member Will Jawando, the Democratic nominee for county executive, had a heart attack over the weekend. Jawando’s office said in a statement Monday that he was playing his “regular weekend pickup basketball game” when he experienced a heart attack Saturday morning. Jawando, 43, was taken to the George Washington University Hospital in D.C., where a stent was placed.

His office said that doctors are “confident in his full recovery given his strong overall health” and that he is “resting comfortably.” He is expected to go home from the hospital later this week. In June, Jawando won the Democratic nomination for Montgomery County executive, making him the clear favorite to win the position in November in the deep-blue county. Jawando will be following his doctor’s guidance and adjusting his office hours in the coming weeks, according to the statement.

“Councilmember Jawando and his family are grateful to God for the friends who acted quickly and to the exceptional doctors, nurses, and staff at The George Washington University Hospital. They are deeply thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers from neighbors, colleagues, and supporters from across the county and state.” Jawando’s office said in a statement. County Executive Marc Elrich said in a statement that he was “very concerned” when he heard about Jawando’s heart attack and looks forward to seeing him “back on his feet soon.” “I’m relieved that he received immediate care and is doing well.” Elrich stated.

“I’m wishing Will a full and speedy recovery and hope he takes the time he needs to rest and get healthy. My thoughts are with Michele, their children, and the entire Jawando family. I also want to thank the friends who acted quickly and the doctors, nurses, and staff at George Washington University Hospital who cared for him.
