More students can pursue mother tongue languages under expanded programme from 2027

Starting in 2027, the Ministry of Education will expand its language elective programmes to provide more students with opportunities to deepen their proficiency in mother tongue languages. The initiative includes the expansion of the Tamil and Chinese language elective programmes, as well as the Malay (Special Programme).

This expansion aims to increase access to advanced language studies, allowing a broader range of students to pursue these subjects at a higher level. By broadening the scope of these elective programmes, the ministry intends to foster a stronger engagement with mother tongue languages among the student population.
