Mount Athos will receive a new multi-purpose regional health clinic following the approval of a €3.4 million funding package by the Region of Central Macedonia. Regional Governor Athina Aidona signed the funding decision, with the project to be financed through the region’s ESPA European funding programme. The new public health facility will serve both the monastic community and the millions of pilgrims who visit Mount Athos each year.

The clinic will operate under the responsibility of Greece’s 4th Health Region (4th HPE) and will be housed in a newly constructed building within Vatopedi Monastery. Aidona said the project was being delivered in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the 4th Health Region to establish an essential public healthcare facility inside Mount Athos. “We are funding the construction of a new building within Mount Athos to create a much-needed public health unit that will prove invaluable both for the monastic community and for the millions of visitors to Mount Athos each year,” she said.

She described the development as a lasting investment for the Athonite community that would address a significant gap in healthcare services. Aidona also highlighted the Region of Central Macedonia’s long-standing support for Mount Athos through projects that protect its architectural, cultural and religious heritage, safeguard its natural environment and monasteries, strengthen infrastructure and improve daily life for monks while enhancing the experience of pilgrims. Designed to blend with Mount Athos The new clinic will be designed to complement Mount Athos’ unique architectural and natural landscape while complying with the strict building regulations that apply within the autonomous monastic community.

Plans include two underground levels of approximately 400 square metres each, topped by a 150-square-metre above-ground wing. The project will incorporate specialised construction materials to ensure the building harmonises with its historic surroundings. The clinic will be built on a 697.66-square-metre site within Vatopedi Monastery.
