Mujeres indígenas piden voz propia en ONU: "Somos contrapeso a posturas antidemocráticas"

Teresa Zapeta, executive director of the International Indigenous Women's Forum (FIMI), advocated for the formal recognition of indigenous peoples as distinct entities within the United Nations during an interview in New York on September 8. Zapeta emphasized that this institutional inclusion is necessary to grant indigenous women a direct voice in global decision-making processes.

Beyond institutional representation, Zapeta characterized the participation of indigenous women as a vital democratic safeguard. She argued that their involvement serves as a necessary counterweight to rising antidemocratic movements, positioning the inclusion of indigenous perspectives as a strategy for strengthening global governance.
