Munich picked for Germany's bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2036, 2040 or 2044

Munich has been selected to lead Germany's national bid to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044. The decision follows a selection process in Baden-Baden where Munich successfully surpassed a rival bid from Cologne.

If successful, the bid would return the Summer Olympics to German soil for the first time in over six decades. The country has not hosted the event since the 1972 Summer Games in Munich.

Despite the long hiatus, Germany's efforts to bring the Olympics back have faced sustained resistance and difficulty. Since the 1972 Munich Games, the country has launched seven previous bids to host the Olympics, all of which were unsuccessful.
