NewzDennis Miracles Aboagye, an aspiring National Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has cautioned against what he describes as selective justice and the targeting of political opponents. He is warning that such actions could set a dangerous precedent for future governments. Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday, Mr Aboagye argued that no political party remains in power forever and urged Ghanaians not to celebrate the prosecution or incarceration of political opponents simply because they belong to a different party.
His comments come ahead of an NPP-led demonstration over what the party says are growing concerns about the administration of justice and the treatment of some of its members. According to him, history has shown that every government eventually leaves office, making it dangerous to establish practices that future administrations could adopt against their predecessors. “It may be CPP, it may be PNC, be it PNP, but what you are basically telling the country is that tomorrow, when another party is in power, you see, no government will be in power forever.
“Even in our darkest ages, even with military rule, there was change of government. Even the military, even with guns, even when people were being dragged from their rooms and being shot in the head in this country, there was a change of government,” he said. “So don’t delude yourself and think that I am in power today and I’ll be in power forever.
There will be a change in government one day. It could even be your own party, but you will not be part of it.” Mr Aboagye warned that allowing political allies to escape scrutiny while pursuing opponents accused of similar offences would only create a precedent that could later be used against those currently in power. “And that precedent of leaving the people who are close to me to do what they have to do, but let me go after my opponents who are also accused of doing the same thing and incarcerate them, will be used against you,” he stated.
When host Evans Mensah asked whether he was suggesting an NPP government would retaliate if it returned to power, Mr Aboagye rejected that interpretation. “No, I haven’t said that….but I am saying that precedent becomes law,” he replied. He said his criticism was intended to prevent such a cycle from taking root.
“That’s why I’m speaking against it. He is cautioning that the treatment of political opponents today could become the standard for future administrations. Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, Mr Aboagye argued that actions taken against political opponents could have lasting consequences for Ghana’s democracy, regardless of which party eventually assumes power.
