Nevada’s first wastewater-to-drinking-water plant breaks ground in Reno

The City of Reno and the Truckee Meadows Water Authority have officially broken ground on Nevada’s first Advanced Purified Water Facility. Located in the North Valleys, the project is designed to treat wastewater and return it to the municipal supply as potable drinking water. Construction began last week, with the facility expected to be operational by the early 2030s.

This infrastructure initiative represents a significant shift in regional water management, aiming to recycle water that would otherwise be discarded. By repurposing wastewater for kitchen taps, the project seeks to address long-term water sustainability in the region.
