New cars sold in Japan from September 2031 must have driver monitoring systems

Starting in September 2031, all new cars sold in Japan will be legally required to feature driver monitoring systems. These mandatory systems are designed to continuously observe the driver's level of attention on the road.

Under the new mandate, the technology will be capable of issuing alerts to the driver whenever it detects indicators of fatigue, such as drowsy driving, or when there is a suspicion that the driver is distracted by looking at mobile phones.
