A new scientific study analyzing the brains of deceased former professional football players has revealed widespread signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease. According to the research findings, at least one in four former NFL players examined had the condition.

CTE is believed to be caused by years of sustained head trauma. The disease can currently only be confirmed posthumously through a brain autopsy.
