New York leaders ‘lied’ about toxic air after 9/11, Mayor Zohran Mamdani says

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the release of tens of thousands of documents on Tuesday regarding the city's response to air toxicity following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The mayor stated that the records demonstrate that city leadership at the time did not fully disclose the extent of the health risks posed by the air quality in the aftermath of the event, which resulted in 2,977 deaths.

The disclosure occurs as the city approaches the 25th anniversary of the attacks. The newly released files are intended to provide transparency concerning the information officials possessed regarding environmental hazards in the period immediately following the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.
