New York turned 250 Christmas trees into breakwaters to restore salt marsh

Officials in New York have repurposed 250 discarded Christmas trees to create natural breakwaters within the Jamaica Bay wildlife refuge. The initiative aims to protect newly planted salt marsh vegetation from the impact of erosive waves. By acting as a physical barrier, the trees successfully trapped sediment, which resulted in the partial burial and stabilization of the marsh area by the fall season. This project demonstrates a method for utilizing recycled organic materials to support coastal restoration and environmental conservation efforts.
