On September 1, the National Assembly of Nicaragua approved a constitutional reform in its first legislature that extends presidential terms to seven years and bars opposition members from running for office. Following this development, the Government of Costa Rica issued an official statement denouncing a continued deterioration of democracy in Nicaragua.

In response to Costa Rica's diplomatic note, the Nicaraguan government rejected the concerns raised by San Jose, denouncing the action as unacceptable foreign interference in its domestic affairs.
