Norway seizes Russian ship to enforce $4.22 billion Ukrainian compensation claim

Norway has seized a Russian research and cruise vessel, the Professor Molchanov, off the Arctic Svalbard archipelago. The action was carried out on behalf of Ukrainian state energy firm Naftogaz to enforce a $4.22 billion compensation claim awarded for Russia's 2014 seizure of Naftogaz assets in Crimea.

The seizure represents a concrete international enforcement of financial penalties stemming from territorial disputes following the 2014 annexation. In response to the detainment, Moscow has strongly challenged the Norwegian action, denouncing the seizure of the vessel as an act of piracy.
