NWA temporarily reinstates failed embankment along Mineral Heights to Lionel Town main road

CLARENDON, Jamaica — The National Works Agency (NWA) says a failed section of the road embankment along the Mineral Heights to Lionel Town main road in Clarendon has been temporarily reinstated. The NWA, in a press release on Wednesday, said it carried out emergency work overnight to fill in the hole that was discovered Tuesday, leading to the corridor being reduced to single-lane traffic. Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said the area that measured over six metres wide and four metres deep was excavated and suitable material was used to recreate the road embankment.

The road failure was in the vicinity of the Vere Technical High School and was located along a stretch that is used heavily by large vehicles that carry aggregates. Shaw said that though the impacted section of the road has been restored, motorists should continue to exercise caution in the area, as the permanent works are yet to be done. The NWA’s technical team is continuing its investigations as to what might have led to the embankment failure, especially as there is no known drainage system in the immediate area.
