Dominican Republic: Nearly half a million children and adolescents could be left without classrooms due to educational deficit

The Dominican Republic faces significant infrastructure and coverage challenges ahead of the 2026-2027 school year, with reports indicating that nearly half a million children and adolescents are at risk of being left without classroom access. Among these figures, the Association of Dominican Teachers (ADP) has specifically identified 153,000 children aged three who may lack placement.

In response to the potential deficit, Bishop Jesús Castro Marte has urged a collaborative effort between the government, religious institutions, private businesses, and social organizations. The proposal suggests the temporary conversion of hotels, warehouses, and other available facilities into classrooms to accommodate students and mitigate the impact of the educational shortfall.
