Seven OAS countries support rejection of electoral restrictions in Nicaragua

On August 4, a group of seven member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) expressed deep concern regarding recent statements made by Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega concerning the suppression of elections in the Central American nation. The diplomatic response centers on rejecting these electoral restrictions.

Concurrently, exiled Nicaraguan opposition figures called on OAS member states to apply regional pressure against the government led by Ortega and copresident Rosario Murillo. The opposition characterizes the current administration as a dictatorship and seeks international intervention to address the political situation.
