Owaisi hits back at Shah’s UCC pledge, questions BJP allies’ independence

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has publicly criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent announcement regarding the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across 21 states. Owaisi argued that the proposed legislation is not intended to promote equality but is instead a targeted measure directed at the Muslim community. He further questioned the political independence of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) coalition allies in light of the policy push.

As part of his critique, Owaisi challenged the BJP to demonstrate the efficacy of the UCC by implementing its framework in Goa, where a version of the code already exists. Additionally, he voiced opposition to existing legislative measures, specifically citing the Disturbed Areas Act and various state-level provisions concerning interfaith marriages, often referred to as 'love jihad' laws.
