A prosperous colony, 4,000 settlers, and a trade that ended up founding New York: the forgotten story of Willoughbyland

Willoughbyland was a brief and largely forgotten English colony established in part of present-day Suriname, populated by some 4,000 settlers. Despite being a prosperous settlement during the British Empire's expansion in the Americas, it was ultimately ceded to the Dutch.
