Paros Mayor, Deputy Mayor Arrested in Fire Investigation

Greek authorities have arrested the Mayor of Paros, the municipality’s Deputy Mayor for Sanitation, a waste management contractor and a municipal garbage truck driver as part of the ongoing investigation into the major wildfire that broke out on the Cycladic island on Tuesday, 28 July. According to Greek media reports, the arrests were made during the preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the fire. Investigators are examining whether any actions or omissions may have contributed to the blaze.

The Hellenic Fire Service, which is leading the investigation into the cause of the wildfire, has not yet issued an official statement confirming the arrests or detailing the specific charges the four suspects may face. Authorities have, however, imposed a combined administrative fine of €8,437.50 on those arrested. They are also expected to appear before the competent public prosecutor.

Meanwhile, firefighting crews remain on high alert across Paros.
