The disappearance of a trading card depicting NBA Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg led staff members at a Deerfield Beach shop to discover that one of their colleagues had been swiping rare and pricey sports cards, including those showing Lionel Messi and Caitlin Clark, deputies said.Maximo Viani Otoni, 22, of Coconut Creek, was arrested on a grand theft charge on Thursday.According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a collector had bought the Cooper Flagg card, valued at $3,500, from the store VIP Rips and requested expedited shipping. But staff at the shop, located at 1245 S. A BSO arrest report states that through surveillance video, they found that Otoni was the last person to handle it.Deputies said Otoni admitted to taking the card during a phone call and staffers found it in his mailbox. They said he then admitted he had three other trading cards: two Lionel Messi cards valued at $2,200 and $70, respectively, and a Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo autographed card valued at up to $2,000.BSO investigators would eventually go to Otoni’s home, where they said he admitted to having six more trading cards, including another Flagg card worth about $2,200, an autographed Caitlin Clark card worth about $1,500 and a Dirk Nowitzki card worth about $2,200.They said the 10 cards Otoni stole were valued at up to $17,220.As of Friday morning, Otoni was being held in the BSO Main Jail.
