Weapons inside the prison and disputes between inmates: the unanswered questions after the violence at El Castillo

Between May and October 2026, a total of 22 people died across five separate episodes of violence within the Aguaruto prison in Culiacán and El Castillo prison in Mazatlán, in the state of Sinaloa.

The casualties from these incidents inside the penal facilities included a two-year-old child who was present inside one of the locations during the violence.
