Fujimori takes office in Peru and announces the armed forces will join the fight against crime

Keiko Fujimori was sworn in as the president of Peru on Tuesday following a narrow victory in the June runoff election, where she won by fewer than 50,000 votes. Her inauguration marks the beginning of her term as the country’s ninth president in a decade.

Upon taking office at the Congress in Lima, Fujimori announced a hardline security strategy to address a significant surge in gang violence, extortion, and illegal mining. As part of this initiative, she pledged to deploy the armed forces to crime-ridden areas. Under the new policy, the military will temporarily assume internal control during states of emergency, working in coordination with the National Police to combat organized crime.
