Arlington National Cemetery is planning on putting a Confederate statue back up. Commission of Fine Arts approved this on Thursday I believe. Three years after the bronze Confederate Memorial was removed from Arlington National Cemetery, plans are moving forward to return it next year.

Thursday, the Office of Army Cemeteries presented its final design plans to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by President Donald Trump. The 30-foot-tall bronze sculpture that sits atop a 3-foot-tall polished granite base, will be located in Section 16 of Arlington National Cemetery, a section which contains the remains of 442 Confederate soldiers.

The bronze bas-relief depicts mostly life-sized figures in wartime and domestic scenes, including a Black woman holding a child of a white officer in a “Mammy” stereotype, as well as an enslaved man following his owner into war. In 2022, under the Biden administration, an independent commission recommended to Congress that the memorial be taken down, as part of a Defense Department push to remove names and symbols that commemorate the Confederacy from military-related facilities. Last August, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the memorial would be returned.

“It never should have been taken down by woke lemmings. Unlike the Left, we don’t believe in erasing American history — we honor it,” Hegseth said in a social media post, at the time. When it was unveiled in 1914, it was called the Confederate Memorial.

The project has been renamed the Moses Ezekiel Sculpture, after the Confederate soldier and artist who created it and is buried in Section 16. The sculpture design plans show several interpretive signs located near the artwork, to provide context. The plans that were unveiled Thursday did not specify what the contextual wording might be.
