Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for 'firm action', after reports said hundreds of Rohingya refugees, who had travelled from Penang, had gathered outside the UNHCR office in Kuala Lumpur.KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered authorities to take firm action against Rohingya refugees who disrupt public order, including those gathering in places and obstructing traffic.Anwar instructed the immigration department, the police, and Kuala Lumpur City Hall to act against those who break the law.“They are gathering near the UNHCR office and disrupting traffic. They cannot simply choose to occupy any part of the city,” he told reporters after attending the closing ceremony of the 2026 International Dakwah and Waqf Convention at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today."Those without valid documents should be taken into immigration custody. Those with documents must be warned that legal action will be taken if they fail to comply."He said the government understood the refugees were seeking protection from the UNHCR, but stressed that they were still required to comply with Malaysian laws.He also said the government could not allow refugees to act in ways that disrupted the safety and wellbeing of local communities."I also remind the police and immigration department to exercise caution.
Such action is necessary to protect women and children, but I believe we must take firm action."We cannot allow them to occupy any place in this country at will without respecting the law,” he said.Hundreds of Rohingya refugees were reported to have gathered outside the UNHCR office at Jalan Bukit Petaling after allegedly travelling from Penang. They were reported to have gathered there to seek protection and a resolution to their status after local residents allegedly forced them to leave a settlement. The gathering caused traffic congestion and raised concerns among nearby residents.
