Post match brawl mars Vauxhall’s win over Charlie Smith in Walker Cup

Vauxhall High School’s dramatic Walker Cup round-of-16 victory over Charlie Smith High School was followed by a reported post-match disturbance, with videos circulating online appearing to show alleged stone-throwing, fighting and damage to property after the game. Vauxhall High secured their place in the next round of the competition after overcoming the hosts in a tense penalty shootout, but the celebrations were overshadowed by events that unfolded after the final whistle. Footage shared online appears to show chaotic scenes at the venue, with reports that students and teachers from Vauxhall High were injured during the incident.

There are also reports that the Vauxhall team was unable to leave the venue for more than an hour due to difficulties accessing an exit. In one video, a man can be heard saying that people at the venue were unable to leave because stones were being thrown. “They are throwing stones and we cannot leave,” the man said before turning the camera towards another man behind a gate, who he said had refused to open it.

Another video appears to show two men engaged in a physical confrontation on the field, while separate footage shows a coaster bus with shattered windows as students disembarked. Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) competition director Ewan Scott confirmed that the governing body was aware of the incidents and said a full investigation would follow. “A thorough investigation will be conducted,” Scott said, following reports submitted by the schools.

The disturbances marred what has otherwise been an impressive campaign for Vauxhall, who have emerged as one of the competition’s surprise performers after entering the knockout phase with a 2-0 victory over Norman Manley High. Their latest victory came in another closely contested encounter, with neither side able to find a winner after 90 minutes before Vauxhall held their nerve from the penalty spot. The result also provided another reminder of the intensity surrounding the Walker Cup, particularly with several of Jamaica’s traditional schoolboy football powers competing in a revamped knockout format.
