Red Cross Deletes Film About Afghan Migrant Accused of Killing British Woman in Athens

The Red Cross has deleted a film it produced about an Afghan migrant now accused of murdering a British woman in Athens and concealing her body in a suitcase. Sharif Ahmadzai, 26, was arrested on Monday over the killing of Scottish Christian volunteer Elisabeth-Jane Ross, 38. He is accused of murdering Ms Ross, placing her body in a suitcase and abandoning it in a derelict building in the Greek capital.

Ms Ross’s body was found by a homeless man on 18 July, three days after she is believed to have been killed. It has emerged that Ahmadzai previously worked with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and a London artist on a short animated film titled Game of Life: The Story of Sharif. Released on YouTube in December 2016, the four-minute film followed his journey from Afghanistan to the Greek island of Lesbos as a 15-year-old.

The video recounts how his father was killed in an ambush and how his mother and siblings died in a suicide bomb attack in Kabul. Ahmadzai was then smuggled through Iran and Turkey before reaching the Moria refugee camp. The film states that he intended to reach the UK, where he claimed he had family who would look after him.

A Red Cross spokesman said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Elisabeth-Jane Ross at this extremely difficult time. The video is no longer publicly accessible.
