Personal from the Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection and elements of the Secretariat of Navy were attacked with gunfire during surveillance operations in the mountainous area of Sinaloa, near the borders with Durango. The armed aggression occurred on September 19.

Following the attack and the subsequent security reinforcement in Mazatlán, authorities reported the arrest of nine individuals identified as members of the Sinaloa Cartel. The operation and the resulting detentions were publicly reported by official official figures, specifically Harfuch.
