Release RCI findings on Tabung Haji, Ismail Sabri says

Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the motion to establish an RCI was approved by the party's Supreme Council in 2021 while he was in government.PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has called on the government to make public the royal commission of inquiry report on Tabung Haji (TH), saying Umno has nothing to hide.He said Umno itself had called for an RCI to investigate the management of the pilgrims' fund board between 2014 and 2020, including the transfer of underperforming assets to a special purpose vehicle."We wanted the RCI, so if the probe has been completed, there is no need to keep its findings under wraps."Release the report and hold those responsible for wrongdoing accountable," he said while campaigning for Barisan Nasional's Lenggeng candidate, Asna Amin, in Negeri Sembilan.Ismail, a former Umno vice-president, said the motion to establish an RCI was approved by the party's Supreme Council in 2021 while he was in government.He said the RCI was not intended to victimise anyone, but to uncover the truth, as TH had come under political attack and faced numerous allegations.On Saturday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed confidence that the Cabinet would approve the release of the RCI report on TH. He also acknowledged that he was being "challenged" by certain quarters over why his administration has yet to release the report despite previously saying it would do so.Anwar said the report was not released earlier because the government wanted to avoid undermining public confidence in the pilgrims' fund board.However, former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan said yesterday that the government's explanation for not releasing the report earlier could undermine public trust in future commissions of inquiry.
