Generational change, the main problem for the coconut industry in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic's coconut industry is facing a significant challenge regarding generational turnover, according to Minister of Agriculture Francisco Oliverio Espaillat Bencosme. Data indicates that 71% of current coconut producers are aged 50 or older, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of the sector's workforce.

In response to these demographics, the government has identified the need to attract younger generations to the industry as a primary strategic goal. The aging producer population is currently viewed as one of the most critical obstacles to the future development and stability of the national coconut industry.
