Generational change, the main problem for the coconut industry in the Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic Minister of Agriculture Francisco Oliverio Espaillat Bencosme identified a lack of generational transition as the primary challenge facing the national coconut industry. Official data indicates that 71% of current coconut producers are 50 years of age or older, raising concerns regarding the long-term sustainability of the sector.

To address this demographic imbalance, the government has emphasized the urgent need to attract younger generations to coconut cultivation. The state is currently evaluating strategies to encourage youth participation to ensure the future viability of the industry.
