Generational change, the main problem for the coconut industry in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic's coconut industry is facing a significant challenge regarding its workforce, with the Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Oliverio Espaillat Bencosme, identifying generational renewal as the sector's primary problem. According to official data, 71% of coconut producers in the country are 50 years of age or older.

In response to this demographic trend, the government has emphasized that the Dominican state needs younger generations to engage in agricultural production to ensure the future stability and growth of the coconut industry.
