Generational change, the main problem for the coconut industry in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic's coconut industry is facing a significant challenge regarding generational succession, according to Minister of Agriculture Francisco Oliverio Espaillat Bencosme. Data indicates that 71% of the nation's coconut producers are aged 50 or older, raising concerns about the long-term sustainability of the sector.

In response to these findings, the government has emphasized the urgent need to attract younger generations to the industry to ensure its future viability. This demographic shift is currently identified as a primary obstacle to the continued development of the country's coconut production.
