Rescuers search for survivors after 7.1 quake kills 18 in southwestern Japan

Rescue operations are underway in southern Japan following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on Tuesday. Emergency workers are frantically searching for trapped survivors through the tangled wreckage of a shopping mall that was destroyed in the disaster.

The quake has resulted in at least 13 deaths. In addition to the fatalities and the destruction of the shopping mall, the powerful tremor ruptured roads across the region and knocked out power to thousands of homes.
