Court observers returned Wednesday for a second day of testimony in the trial of Christian Sanon, one of the accused masterminds of the violent plot to overthrow and kill former Haitian President Jovenel Moise. Jurors began the day listening to the end of testimony from former first lady Martine Moise, as well as from one of her daughters. Both of them survived the 2021 ambush to their home in Port-au-Prince.
A group of armed, ex-soldiers, mostly Colombians, entered the home, shooting and killing the president and injuring the first lady. A doctor from Jackson Memorial Hospital said Martine Moise’s elbow was shattered, and had to be fused together. A forensic pathologist who performed the president’s autopsy testified to his findings, showing x-rays and photographs of Jovenel Moise on the autopsy table.
There were audible groans and gasps in the courtroom as photos of Jovenel Moise’s various bullet wounds were shown, including ones to his chest, and to his head. Some in the gallery held their hands over their mouths, shook their heads, or turned away. The doctor testified as to the president’s cause of death, saying, “The heart was shattered, basically” from the “projectile of a firearm,” adding that he believes Jovenel Moise was shot in the head only after he was already dead.
