A 37-year-old Georgia woman is facing a felony charge after deputies said she allegedly scammed a Florida Keys couple out of thousands of dollars. Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said they booked Johnay Monique Barnett of Roswell, Georgia, into the county jail on Tuesday. According to deputies, it was in December of 2025 when the victims were contacted by someone who claimed to work for the Seminole County jail.
Deputies said that person told the couple their son had been arrested, and they needed to pay $6,500 for an ankle monitor so he could be released. They said after the victims paid the money through Zelle, they were contacted again and told that an additional $9,000 was needed in order for their son to be released. At that point, the victims contacted MCSO to report what happened.
Authorities said the investigation required the assistance of several law enforcement agencies in Georgia, including the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, the Atlanta Police Department, and the Alpharetta Police Department.Through investigative means, that also involved several banking institutions, security footage and past police body camera footage from similar investigations. Authorities said they built a case that led to MCSO obtaining an arrest warrant for Barnett. Deputies said she was arrested and subsequently transferred to Monroe County on one count of larceny.
