Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas, during his tenure as a physician, initiated lawsuits against approximately 700 patients to recover outstanding medical debts. Records indicate that 81 of these individuals were subsequently arrested in connection with these legal proceedings.

Legal filings reveal that patients targeted by these suits were frequently subjected to an 18 percent interest rate on their unpaid balances. In some instances, the enforcement of these debts resulted in the garnishment of patients' bank accounts.
